When it comes to fulfilling your dream of becoming a paranormal investigator, Phasmophobia is a horror game that definitely tests your limits in plenty of different ways. During each contract, you have to collect a mountain of relevant evidence while exploring unnervingly eerie locations that range from dilapidated buildings to fog-filled campsites deep in the woods.
As if that weren't enough, some of these locales feature a special Restricted version that encourages you to approach your investigations a little differently. Certain aspects of your contract will be easier, while being more tightly confined with a murderous ghost also presents its own challenges. Either way, here's a handy guide to all Restricted Maps in Phasmophobia, how they work, and how to unlock them.
Restricted Maps are variants of existing in-game maps in Phasmophobia, particularly the largest in the roster that feature multiple floors and dozens of rooms. As their name suggests, they quite literally restrict you to a specific subsection of that map, placing environmental obstacles that block you from accessing the rest of the map (as seen above).
If the map is big enough, these subsections can change from one contract to the next, sending you to a different area of the building each time. For instance, Brownstone High School (Restricted) features four different subsection variants, while Sunny Meadows (Restricted) has five. This helps keep things interesting for players who want to keep playing on the same map, whether it's for a challenge or otherwise.
These Restricted Maps are intended to provide an alternate and unique experience for players who want to conduct an investigation on that particular map without running laps around a massive area. As a result, they make it much easier to track down the ghost haunting the location, and make the process of ferrying equipment to the ghost's location far more efficient. In turn, this means you don't have to stress over burning through Sanity Medication while just trying to find the ghost's room, or risking premature hunts by the ghost during that part of the process.
In terms of finding the designated Cursed Object for that investigation on these Restricted Maps, their possible spawn locations don't change much at all from where they normally appear in the full version of the map. The only case where that differs is Point Hope Restricted, as Cursed Objects are normally far more spread out on that map. Instead, they're more concentrated to the three floors that the restricted version of the map provides.
Another feature of investigations that can potentially be altered by Restricted versions of maps is Hiding Spots. With a significantly smaller area to work in, the number of hiding spots you can use naturally dwindles, so it's a good idea to get familiar with where they are while completing your contract. Also, the number of Lights you can switch on before the breaker is tripped decreases on smaller maps, so be wary of turning on too many.
Back in 2022, Phasmophobia's very first restricted map released for Sunny Meadows, the infamously difficult asylum map that also serves as the stomping ground for players trying to obtain their Apocalypse trophies. Since then, Restricted versions of other large maps have become available thanks to the game's sweeping Quality of Life updates ahead of its eventual 1.0 full release.
