Towards the start of The Blood of Dawnwalker, you'll be busy completing quests to help your family and fellow neighbors. After completing this opening section and being set free in the open world, you'll quickly find tons of activities to complete. Some are harder than others, and you'll be warned against taking them on until you're a higher level. Even those suitable for your current level can be difficult if your gear is underpowered. As such, you might be wondering how to get better weapons and armor early in The Blood of Dawnwalker.
After completing the prologue, the weaponsmith that was in Laslea village is no longer accessible, so your best bet is to look for the 'Defeat the Camp Guards' activities, marked with a twin-headed dragon icon on your map in the swamp section of this opening area of Briar Sloughs. These are part of the 'Ambrus's Collectors' quest. I've included a screenshot below.
Here, you'll need to defeat the guards in the camp, and then destroy the barrels of blood. After taking down the guards, loot their bodies, but also use your senses (LT/L2) to find barrels and other parts of the camp you can loot. It's in these that you'll find weapons and armor that are likely much better than your current loadout. For example, at the camp most north (and highlighted in the screenshot above), I found this Billhook weapon.
Not only did it have a much higher DPS than my weapon at the time, but it also has a 'Weapon Art' that can be used by pressing L1+R1/ LB+RB when it's charged. This allowed me to deal unblockable strikes on my enemies and deal a lot of damage in quick succession.
In these same lootable containers, I also found Winter Vambraces, which boosted my armor. I've typically found during the early hours of The Blood of Dawnwalker that the better weapons and armor upgrades are found in these containers, though it's also worth looting defeated enemy bodies, as these can have some weapons and armor. More often than not, it's lower quality than what you'll have equipped, but it can be good to sell.
Before equipping armor, it's worth noting that some of the pieces you find will have a warning that you're not proficient with them, and as a result, their stats will be lowered by 30% when equipped. It's worth noting that there are plenty of other Ambrus-related quests that will have you visiting camps and strongholds filled with guards and lootable containers. These are the best places to find better early-game weapons and armor, and will also help you to raise your notoriety to Notorious or higher for the 'Where Loyalty Lies' main quest.
I personally found just getting the Billhook sword noted in the guide above made combat much easier and less of a chore. Before I found it, it was taking a good few minutes to defeat an enemy because I wasn't dealing enough damage. After getting the Billhook, I was able to defeat multiple enemies in minutes and progress through quests a lot faster. Keep in mind, enemies with an orange or red skull next to their names are still likely to be very difficult to beat, even if you find slightly better gear.
