Call my video game taste a jack of all trades because I'm out there beating up street thugs as an ex-Yakuza, taking Polaroid shots of my blue-haired ex, or just racing my pimped-out ricer in whatever arcade-racing game makes me reminisce about the PS2-era of racing games. But I don't think I've yet described my guilty-pleasure genre of cozy games, specifically the lite farming sim ones like Disney Dreamlight Valley or even Hello Kitty Island Adventure. Psst, don't tell any of my friends. I play them in secret.
Anywho, so there I was, being one of the lucky ones chosen to attend NIS America's brief demo session for Village in the Shade, developed by Nippon Ichi Software, the studio behind the Yomawari series. There’s something inherently comforting about the idea of moving to a quiet Japanese countryside village. Tending to a farm, growing your own crops, getting to know the locals, fishing by the river, and slowly turning a rundown home into something that feels like your own sounds like the perfect recipe for a relaxing life sim, right? But Village in the Shade has one very important caveat: you really shouldn’t be outside at night.
I came away particularly interested in how naturally the game combines its two very different sides of this cozy farm sim with atmospheric horror, enough to not totally jump-scare you for cheap reactions but at least give you that very subtle sense of paranoia. But hey, with what I had to get away with, there's really something special to play here.
First, we have to acknowledge that the game's Japanese release has already surpassed 150,000 sales since its launch back in July. Given that success, NIS America has a chance to localize the project and launch it for Western audiences. And oh man, it looks great from the teaser we were offered here, an absolute treat for the melancholic and supernatural enthusiast like myself.
Much of what I had to chew on, along with the rest of the intrigued overseers, came from a PS5 gameplay session that broke down the day and night cycle as well as an overview of what the misty yet eerily lively village of Kagatsu laid in store for you. Don't worry, it won't immediately give you a fright like you're in a town called Silent Hill, but it's not exactly a Loud Mountain either.
At its heart, Village in the Shade is still a farming and life sim game. Your days revolve around caring for your homestead, planting and harvesting crops, fishing, looking after livestock, taking care of your pet wolves (they're friendly and cute... I think), crafting useful items, and just gradually expanding your property. But be mindful that you'll need to keep your stamina up if you want to do all the chores in your daily routine, so make sure you get to learning any recipes you can or have a potato or two to just plop in your stomach to eat when you're out and about exploring or doing activities.
The presentation did a good job of showing how the daytime activities fit together without making the farming itself feel like an afterthought. Mainly because the latter aspect has its own fairly deep mechanics, like gaining grades on certain crops and seeds by showcasing them at the end of each in-game month and even laying out boardwalks around the grids to ensure no darn weeds take over their precious growth. You can also use the resources you grow/process, plus any spare materials lying around, to create new furniture for your house, or just go around town to buy them from a visiting vendor.
