Final Fantasy Resonance Preview: A Tribute to Gaming's Legacy

Final Fantasy Resonance Preview: A Tribute to Gaming's Legacy

There have been plenty of Final Fantasy games that serve as love letters to the long-running franchise. Dissidia, Final Fantasy XIV, Strangers of Paradise, and of course, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, all pay homage to past games. So, it shouldn't be that surprising that the upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance, which itself is an adaptation of Brave Exvius' first story arc, also pays homage to Final Fantasy's past. While you don't get to directly control famous characters from Final Fantasy's past, you do get to utilize their power. This is thanks to Visions, a core mechanic in Final Fantasy Resonance and its link to the past.

The power of warrior's past is a core mechanic in Final Fantasy Resonance, but you don't directly take control of Tidus, Cloud or other heroes. Instead, the story centers on Rain, Lasswell and Fina as they embark on a quest to protect the Crystals after a mysterious group threatens to destroy them all.

To help them on their journey, the group uncover special crystals that help them forge links with warriors from other realms. These are the Visions of Final Fantasy Resonance, and it's their powers that will help you push back the darkness and protect the Crystals.

To put it simply, Visions are equipable items that give you the skills and abilities of the assigned hero. Visually, in battle you'll see a projection of the equipped vision. Each Vision specializes in different things, making mixing and matching them with your party part of the strategy. For example, Cloud can deliver powerful elemental strikes but lacks magical skills. Meanwhile, Terra can utilize Fire, Water and Ice magic, making her ideal against enemies with high physical defense.

Visions also make their mark during the Stagger phase of battle. When successfully Staggering an enemy, there's a chance it may be a 'Sweeping Stagger.' This gives all allies a free hi, and at the end, you can select one of your equipped Visions to deliver a powerful attack or support move. Each of these powerful attacks is associated with a specific element that, particularly during difficult boss fights, can be extremely helpful.

To get Visions, you'll travel across the world map and discover Sanctums of Light. Entering and conversing with the crystal inside grants you a Vision, but receiving them is just the beginning. During your adventure you'll collect magicite that can then be traded at Moogle Shops to level up your Visions, enhancing their abilities. For example, upgrading Terra turns her Fire, Water and Blizzard spells into Fira, Watera and Blizzara. With how many Visions there are in the base game, you'll need to pick and choose who you want to level up.

While Brave Exvius featured a Vision roster of more than 1800, Final Fantasy Resonance will only launch with 26. These are broken up into five specialties; Sentinel (protects allies), Commando (deal damage), Breaker (staggering focused), Medic (healing) and Saboteur (disrupts enemies).

These are the Visions of Final Fantasy Resonance, and it's their powers that will help you push back the darkness and protect the Crystals.
