A recent Rocket League update has leaked the Kingdom Hearts collab content and confirmed that it’s not just Fortnite that has had to change the Kingdom Key symbol.
It’s been rumoured for a long time now that Kingdom Hearts was going to be crossing over with Fortnite (and, in turn, Rocket League). The much-anticipated collab was finally confirmed in key art for the launch of the Override season, which gave us our only official look so far at Sora in Fortnite, complete with his Kingdom Key.
Eagle-eyed fans would have quickly noticed, though, that Sora wasn’t actually holding the Kingdom Key, as the keychain featured a Loot Llama instead of the typical Mickey Mouse symbol. This was already interesting enough, but a recent leak has shown that Fortnite isn’t the only game with a fake Keyblade.
Over the past day, Rocket League dataminers have managed to get the Kingdom Hearts cosmetics working in-game, giving us a look at all the unique trails, skins, banners, and even vehicles that are included with the collab. One of the cosmetics is a goal animation that shows a Kingdom Key locking a keyhole.
Except that clearly isn’t the Kingdom Key, as the keychain has a Rocket League ball instead of the Mickey Mouse symbol. This is confirmed by a leaked banner that shows Rocket League’s version of the Keyblade, complete with the same football symbol instead of Mickey Mouse’s head.
So, what’s going on with both Fortnite and Rocket League’s Keyblades? At first, you could assume that Disney might not have wanted Mickey Mouse’s head to be featured in either game, but that doesn’t really track considering Epic and Disney’s relationship and the fact that some of the Rocket League wheels has a Mickey Mouse symbol.
Which means that the reason why Fortnite and Rocket League both have altered Keyblades without the Mickey Mouse symbol is likely because of KH lore. Sora is supposed to be the only one to wield the Kingdom Key, so Epic likely changed the Keyblade featured in both Rocket League and Fortnite to not be the real deal.
This makes a lot of sense considering Sakurai changed Sora’s Smash reveal trailer to make sure Mario couldn’t wield the Keyblade.
