For obvious reasons, this was pretty controversial. But despite all of the frustration this caused, most of us sat down and watched it anyway - and through Netflix, it would seem. That's because the GTA 6 Extended Look was the most-watched release on Netflix last week, despite not being a real show or film.
As reported by Variety, GTA 6 Extended Look amassed 31.1 million views on Netflix alone. This propelled it to the top of the Netflix charts, despite the fact that we've never really seen the subscription service host anything like this before.
In fact, it seems that the Extended Look was much more successful on Netflix than it was on YouTube, meaning most viewers wanted to watch it as soon as it was released. Right now, the YouTube upload is on a little under 18 million views, and that is despite YouTube's way of calculating views allowing for views to stack up quicker, since it counts rewatches from the same household, unlike Netflix.
This also means that the reveal was a success despite all of the leaks. In the days prior, a person or group going by the name Cyberleek started sharing full gameplay clips and made it clear that they had access to a playable build. It's unclear how they got their hands on this, but Take-Two is currently investigating the matter.
All in all, the Netflix special just goes to show that Rockstar is playing by a different set of rules than everyone else. I wouldn't be surprised if another publisher tried to replicate this, but I would be surprised if it worked.
