Insomniac Games’ community director has debunked the claims that Marvel’s Wolverine reinterprets Logan and Sabretooth’s relationship as romantic.
The atmosphere surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine over the past few weeks has been nothing short of toxic. While it’s true that reviews for the game have been a little less positive than PlayStation and Insomniac would have liked, there’s still far more discourse and arguments than there needs to be.
Yesterday’s fart gas controversy was just the start of things, as the latest uproar that Marvel’s Wolverine is facing is all about Logan and Sabretooth’s relationship. Some have misconstrued recent comments about the pair as a sign that they have a romantic relationship, which absolutely isn’t the case.
The discourse this time around originates from Gene Park’s review of Marvel’s Wolverine for The Washington Post, which includes some quotes from narrative director Walt Williams. At one point in the review, Park discusses Logan and Sabretooth’s relationship with one another and how their rivalry is a bit more friendly to begin with, which he and Williams describe as “yearning”.
Williams says that Logan feels the yearning between the two and “gets scared and pulls away”, while Sabretooth wants to “lash out to exert that hurt forward”. In a beautiful understanding of the two’s link, Williams says that “hate and love are so hand in hand” and that the hurt they cause each other means the “pain is shared”.
The use of the word “yearning” has been misinterpreted (in bad faith or not, I’ll let you decide) as romantic, when it’s really just brothers in arms and nostalgia. Insomniac Games community director James Stevenson confirmed this in a retweet of Park’s post about people getting the wrong idea, noting that “Their relationship is more like brothers on Team X”, and calling it a “best friend” thing in another post.
Sabretooth and Logan’s toxic relationship is actually one of my favourite parts of the story of Marvel’s Wolverine. It's not exactly subtle, but it's more interesting than a simple rivalry.
Stevenson also confirmed that Logan and Victor’s relationship has a different origin in Marvel’s Wolverine. One fan pointed out that it infamously started with Victor murdering Logan’s lover, Silver Fox, in the comics, to which Stevenson simply replied: “Not in our universe”, confirming a big change to the pair's history.
