Similar to many open-world free-to-play games, Aniimo has requirements which will prevent you from fully exploring the world. So, before you go out and look for the rare Aniimo, you absolutely need to raise your level cap. You do this by following the Main Story quest until you need to increase your Student Rank, and then fulfilling the Elite Training quests.
When this happens, you'll need to do a few quests to unlock the next level cap, and only after that can you continue to explore. We highly recommend you clear these out first and foremost as they will prevent you from doing many other things in the game.
Aniimo may seem like it plays like a mainline Pokémon game, but in reality it plays a lot like Pokémon Go. By this we mean that you should absolutely catch every Aniimo you come across, even if you already have a bunch of them.
Each new Aniimo you catch will give you a chunk of player XP, but every single catch (including Aniimo you've already caught) will give your party Aniimo extra experience points. Not only that, but any Aniimo you catch and don't want to keep, can be released for upgrade items which you will need to raise the ones you do want to keep.
Just like Pokémon, not all Aniimo are built the same. Fortunately, it's easy to tell how much potential an Aniimo has based on their rarities. After you catch a bunch of Aniimo and take them for assessment terminal, you can figure out how much potential an Aniimo has based on their rarity. Here's the rundown:
In general, you want to have a team of Perfect Aniimo, but since they are so rare, you should aim to have an Elite team until you manage to get Perfect ones. You'll often need to capture a lot of Aniimo before you get an Elite and even more until you get a Perfect Aniimo.
