The Hito Hito no Mi has become one of the most important Devil Fruits in the world of One Piece, largely due to its subclasses that have gained tremendous importance over the years. In One Piece chapter 1044, which was officially released on March 28, 2022, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #17, Eiichiro Oda introduced fans to the power of Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika. However, the original Hito Hito no Mi belongs to none other than the doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates, Tonytony Chopper.
Chopper's Hito Hito no Mi was introduced in One Piece chapter 138 on June 5, 2000, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #27. Since then, this Devil Fruit has slowly grown in terms of power. Now, in the most recent climax of the Elbaf arc, Eiichiro Oda has taken this original Hito Hito no Mi to a new level, setting up an even bigger upgrade for it in the great war to come.
Chopper's Hito Hito no Mi has grown tremendously over the years, primarily through the usage of Rumble Balls, introduced first in One Piece Chapter 148. These Rumble Balls are a powerful drug developed by Chopper himself that leads him to the next level, granting him various transformations. For the longest time, Chopper's strongest ability using these Rumble Balls was Monster Point. Before the timeskip, he had no control over this power, but after the timeskip, he gained conscious control over it. In the Wano Country arc, specifically in One Piece chapter 914, Chopper was seen enhancing the Monster Point by increasing the time limit to 30 minutes, which allowed him to hold his own against the likes of Queen for an extended period of time before eventually being overpowered.
While these upgrades already make Chopper a dangerous pirate, Eiichiro Oda has now set up another massive upgrade for him in the Elbaf arc. In One Piece chapter 1178, which was officially released on March 30, 2026, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 18, Eiichiro Oda showcased Chopper's ability to counter Nerona Imu's Domi Reversi. Imu's Domi Reversi works primarily based on the manipulation of demonic energy, or Omen, or Maki. This Maki is present within everyone, according to Imu, but through corruption and the craving for further power, this energy can be exploited by Nerona Imu to turn people into his subservient slaves.
"Omen is my military might. It's a power that dwells within all living things. People crave power. However, if the power they crave is obtained through ease, it leads to corruption." — Imu explains Maki, One Piece Chapter #1181
In exchange for their subservience, Imu grants them tremendous powers, including regeneration and immortality. At the core of the demonic powers that exist in the world of One Piece, such as the Covenant or Domi Reversi, is Maki or demonic aura. This demonic power can be directly countered by the Hito Hito no Mi. In other words, Nerona Imu cannot Domi Reversi Chopper because his Devil Fruit turns him into a human and allows him to attain enlightenment, as confirmed by Oda himself.
The climax of the Elbaf arc gave us a unique look into Chopper's new abilities. For the very first time, Chopper has started affecting things other than himself, and that is a telltale sign of Devil Fruit Awakenings. In One Piece chapter 1046, which was released on April 11, 2022, Kaido explained Devil Fruit Awakening to be a state that a user can tap into once their mind and body catch up with their Devil Fruit ability. It seems that is precisely what has happened with Chopper, and now it allows him to affect things other than himself in his surroundings. Chopper can not only resist the power of Domi Reversi himself, but he can also pass on this resistance to others on contact. That is precisely how he canceled Imu's Domi Reversi en masse towards the end of the Elbaf arc, making it a new, broken Hito Hito no Mi upgrade.
