Nintendo has revealed Kirby and the World Beyond, a massive-looking Switch 2 adventure that seemingly gives the pink puffball his own Breath of the Wild-style open-world reinvention.
Announced during the September 9 Nintendo Direct, The World Beyond is the latest mainline entry in the Kirby series and will launch exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 in spring 2027.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land previously brought the franchise into fully 3D environments, but its world was still divided into individual levels selected from a map. Based on Nintendo’s first reveal trailer, The World Beyond appears to be taking the next step by placing Kirby inside a far larger and more freely explorable environment.
Nintendo has not yet explicitly detailed how its world is structured, so it remains unclear whether every location will be seamlessly connected. However, everything about the reveal frames this as Kirby’s long-awaited open-world adventure.
The trailer initially shows Kirby inside the bright and familiar surroundings of Dream Land. That peaceful setting is eventually revealed to be contained inside a much larger structure, with Kirby breaking beyond its apparent boundary and discovering an enormous world waiting outside.
It immediately evokes The Truman Show, where Jim Carrey’s Truman Burbank learns that his idyllic hometown is actually an artificial environment sealed beneath a gigantic dome.
There is currently no indication that Kirby has secretly been starring in a reality television series, but the central idea appears similar. The safe world Kirby has always known may be only a small part of something much larger.
Once outside, Kirby overlooks a sprawling landscape filled with distant mountains, forests, structures and other landmarks. The shot makes the Breath of the Wild connection especially difficult to miss, echoing Link’s first view of the enormous open world of Hyrule.
