This probably won't surprise anybody who has read my work, but I'm a big fan of Metroidvanias. I especially love dark, challenging fantasy Metroidvanias, which were largely pioneered by the various Igavanias. But since then, the wait for something equally amazing from Konami felt endless.
Until the reveal of Castlevania: Belmont's Curse. Put simply, this feels like a true return to form for the series. And what better way to celebrate its pending release than to showcase several other worthy Metrodvanias you should play before it comes out?
The main thing these games have in common is that they're all dark, fantasy Metroidvanias. They've largely been ranked according to their critical reception, though as a fan of the genre, I had to pull rank towards the end. With that out of the way, let's dive in and explore these vast, epic adventures!
PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S
I'll admit, it took me a while to actually discover the Skautfold games. And while they're pretty interesting, the one that I had to include here is Skautfold: Usurper. It takes place in an alternate London infested by Lovecraftian horrors, and unlike the first game, it's a 2D platformer-styled adventure.
This game really tried to be approachable to both new and old gamers, mostly by virtue of the Guard system that rewarded you for taking risks with Guard Points. It also featured a huge selection of weapons to wield, including scythes, spears and, of course, whips.
While there was a bit of a mixed reception to Skautfold: Usurper, it definitely took the series in a positive direction. That said, it ranks low on this list in large part because it felt like it was derivative of the Igavanias without doing a lot to innovate.
