Steam has an upcoming open-world survival game called Stormforge that looks like a new take on Valheim with Breath of the Wild visuals. Stormforge has already reached over 100,000 wishlists on Steam, which is an early sign of its high potential to become the next big release in the genre. Lucky for fans, the wait for Stormforge won't be long, as it plans to release in November.
Stormforge hasn't solely been compared to Valheim. Many think it also channels Tribes of Midgard and the now-sunset Spellbreak, which might not be as widely known as Valheim but are still recognized titles among fans of the genre. That said, developer Roboto Games has revealed that Stormforge draws inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons and the Stormlight Archive novels, with a visual style influenced by Jean 'Moebius' Giraud and Miyazaki.
A notable difference between Stormforge and Valheim is its visual style. Rather than Valheim's retro-modern pixelated aesthetic, developer Roboto Games appears to have used cel-shading to give Stormforge an appearance reminiscent of games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That said, Stormforge's gameplay loop remains closely aligned with Valheim-like open-world survival games, while a new "magical storm" feature adds a twist to the familiar formula.

In Stormforge, players need to enter dangerous tornado zones scattered across the map and defeat the bosses within to earn skill points. The storms themselves are highly hostile and can kill players in various ways, including by hurling nearby boulders at them or inflicting a fatal storm corruption effect. However, they also conceal mythical creatures comparable to Valheim's bosses. Defeating these bosses is key to obtaining rare materials and crafting high-level gear and weapons.
Up to eight players can team up to play Stormforge together. What makes this game mode particularly interesting, however, is its proximity-based enemy HP system. Basically, if one squad member sets out to explore the map on their own, the enemies they encounter will have lower HP than those faced by the group as a whole. While Stormforge isn't the first co-op survival game to introduce this feature, it is still something fans of the genre will likely appreciate.
The early-access version of Stormforge will launch on Steam on November 10, 2026. It will feature three biomes and several different classes for players to experiment with. Many features that have become staples of open-world survival crafting games are also in development and will be added in future updates, including farming.
