It's official! Xbox has just announced the disc to digital program that's been rumoured for some time now, allowing you to convert your physical library into digital format across Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
Thousands of games will be available to convert into digital from August 31st for a selection of Xbox Insiders, with more to be added over time. Here's the lowdown on what you can expect:
"Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.
We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come."
Xbox says this move is part of a "broader commitment to game preservation", pointing out that "as technology, devices, and distribution continue to evolve, preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever".
There's no word right now on whether original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs might be supported in the future, but for the moment it's just physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games.
