JRPGs are increasingly becoming mainstream. Not ultra-mainstream like Skyrim, The Witcher, or even Pokémon (which, ok, JRPG), where every new title sells millions just by existing. But at least they're selling, some are headliners at major gaming events, and a few are the most anticipated games to be released this year or next.
As someone who grew up alongside JRPGs, I've seen many series born and even more vanish into thin air, whether because they couldn't adapt to the new generation, due to a lack of sales, or because of disinterest from their own publishers. This caused many incredible JRPG franchises to get lost to time, even those that deserved a second wind.
That's why today I'm going to discuss a few JRPGs that many haven't played, even fans of the genre, but definitely should. Whether it's because they bring something new to the table, are incredibly unusual in their premise while still delivering something authentic, or are simply impressive titles that deserved more love.
Shadow Hearts is often seen as one of the most forgotten JRPG series in the industry, considered an obscure title, one that deserves more affection, and so on. I agree. After all, I was one of those who wanted the return of Shadow Hearts in any shape, way, or form. Considering that Penny Blood will probably disappear even with a successful Kickstarter, chances are slim that we'll see another title in the franchise.
There's a reason why the cult fanbase of Shadow Hearts always asks for the game back, and much of that comes down to its Judgment Ring. The combat system uses this ring as a timed-input system for almost all actions, be it attacks, spells, or even healing. We need to hit the correct timing to execute the action, and if we hit smaller zones, we even boost the effect. It's a really interactive battle system that always keeps us on our toes.
On top of that, Shadow Hearts has a more horror-oriented presentation, with a real-world gothic setting involving demons, sinister creatures, and even some Lovecraftian elements. A port of the first two titles would be enough to appease my mind.
