During today's State of Play showcase, Ghost of Yōtei developer Sucker Punch brought a first-look trailer at Most Wanted. This is the roguelike mode the studio announced alongside the Complete Edition earlier in August.
In today's gameplay debut, we got a better look at the mode's three previously announced characters - alongside the surprise reveal of Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima's protagonist. Jin Sakai's arrival raises the total number of playable characters to four: Atsu, Oyuki, Nagato and Jin.
Jin brings all four of his stances from the first game to Most Wanted, and we even get to see some of them used in the trailer. Jin, like all characters except Atsu, needs to be unlocked. Although everyone starts with a katana, each character has their own unique weapons, abilities and ultimates.
Most Wanted is a single-player, combat-focused, survival mode where you take on bounties that escalate in difficulty. The mode has a roguelike structure with self-contained runs that end when you die. After accepting a bounty to hunt a member of the Yōtei Six, you must fight through waves of enemies on your way to the boss. Each defeated wave unlocks perks you can equip to grow your power. Bounties can be replayed at higher difficulties for better rewards, with the final one reserved for the game's main villain: Lord Saito.
As you play, you'll earn Mon, a currency that can later be spent outside of runs to unlock new techniques and charms, and to upgrade your weapon - all of which will help make you stronger in future runs. Some of those unlocks are cosmetic, and Sucker Punch confirmed they can be used in the main game, or indeed the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion.
"It was important to us to make Most Wanted feel like an extension of Ghost of Yōtei’s core combat systems," Sucker Punch wrote on the PlayStation Blog. "We want playing through runs to take the familiar weapons and systems you're used to and turn them into a fresh experience that lets you experiment with characters and builds to find the loadout that works best for you."
Ghost of Yōtei: Complete Edition arrives 1st October on PS5 and also comes with the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion. A £11.99 / $14.99 Complete Edition upgrade is available to existing owners.
