Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t have the rumoured Disney World or Universal Studios parody theme park, despite how perfect that would be.
As the whole world is painfully aware of, we’ve been waiting a very long time for GTA 6. For a good chunk of the near decade it’s been since Rockstar’s last game, the only thing we had to tide us over was an unending supply of leaks and rumours about what the next Grand Theft Auto, at the time codenamed “Project Americas”, might have in store for us.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, a lot of the reports were focused on GTA 6’s massive map and the many locations that it would include. For my money, the most exciting claim that made the rounds was that the new Vice City would have a Disney World parody called Fairyland, which sounded like a match made in heaven. Sadly, that rumour has just been debunked.
Earlier this week, Game Informer released a massive preview for GTA 6 that revealed a lot of new information, including details about the weather mechanics, exploration, and much more. Uniquely, the preview heavily focused on Leonida and all of the effort that Rockstar put into its interpretation of Florida.
Of course, a big part of Florida is its many theme parks, which, as IGN pointed out, led Game Informer to ask senior vice president of environment art, Paul MacPherson, about whether GTA 6 would have its own take on things like Disney World, SeaWorld, or Universal. In response, MacPherson noted that the game “may not have those exact locations”, even if it’s “geared to getting that full Florida experience”.
A leaked early version of GTA 6’s map did seem to include an aquarium, but it’s not currently clear if that’s in the final game or not.
While MacPherson didn’t directly debunk any specific theme park on the list, it does seem to suggest that none of those three will be getting specific parody locations. I'm betting that Rockstar still has allusions to them since they’re such a core part of Florida, but don’t expect Jason and Lucia to visit a messed-up version of Disney World.
This is all especially interesting considering the aforementioned Fairyland rumour, which many took as fact back when the GTA 6 rumour mill was turning. It’s not clear if it was once part of the plan or just a fake leak included in a long game of telephone, but it is honestly a bit of a shame considering how hard Rockstar would have undoubtedly gone.
