And just when everyone thought they had finally made peace with the chaotic split timelines introduced in the iconic Hyrule Historia artbook, Nintendo decided to log on, quietly update the official Japanese Zelda website, and throw another giant wrench into the machinery.
Now, the latest restructuring brings a handful of major additions across various eras of the overarching lore, especially tied to the most recent chapters of the franchise, proving once again that trying to establish a rigid canon across nearly forty years of video game history is a nearly impossible feat – even for the developers themselves.
Among the smaller revisions scattered across the official site, Nintendo added the backstory events of Echoes of Wisdom right before Skyward Sword, establishing a brand-new creation myth layer at the top of the timeline.
Additionally, the tragedy of the First Princess Zelda, the famous backstory behind the sleeping princess motif, has now been placed right before the events of the original 1986 The Legend of Zelda on the Downfall timeline.
However, the real head-scratcher comes down to how Nintendo handles the founding of Hyrule. Up until now, fans operated under the belief that King Rauru was the singular founding monarch of the kingdom. With this update, the developers have confirmed two separate foundings of Hyrule in the Prime timeline (or three, if you count New Hyrule from Spirit Tracks).
