CD Projekt Red caused quite a stir recently with a full-fledged victory lap for The Witcher 3, breathing new life into the decade-old RPG. While such a long gap is exceptionally rare in the industry, many more open-world games are already lining up for notable improvements of their own. It’s definitely one of the greatest things about modern gaming: developers keep supporting their games with meaningful upgrades and DLC for years after launch, giving fans plenty of reasons to revisit them.
For the lineup below, we’ll highlight the biggest open-world games, whether RPGs or action-adventure titles, that are getting a second life in the coming months. Major new expansions and DLC, exclusive platform ports with new content, Complete or Enhanced editions, full-fledged remasters, and more are all on the way, so don’t rush to write these games off just yet.
Kicking things off, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered launches in just a few weeks, and it’s safe to assume that the game will once again end up among the year’s most-played and popular open-world RPGs, some 11 years later. There are two major things to highlight here. First, it goes beyond the kind of notable visual overhaul we’ve grown used to, bringing substantial gameplay improvements to combat, skill trees, traversal, and animations. Second, it’s a free upgrade for all owners of the original game or its Complete Edition.
Better yet, this isn’t the end for The Witcher 3, as the game’s massive third and possibly final expansion, Songs of the Past, is scheduled for release in 2027. As expected, this addition will be in line with Blood and Wine in terms of scope, delivering a new storyline, a vast new world region, and even a new weapon type for Geralt to use. Yeah, if you’ve ever wondered how to return to and modernize a decade-old title without fully remaking it, CDPR has just set a new bar for doing it properly.
However, that isn’t to say modern-day open-world games fall short of The Witcher 3’s example. Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition looks like another fully justified offering, arriving just a year after the base game. The upcoming edition is packed with content on all fronts, starting with the single-player narrative expansion, Echoes of Sekigahara. Building on the dual-timeline structure of the main game and introducing new characters, a new area, enemies, weapons, gear, and more, the DLC looks like a substantial reason to return to the stunningly beautiful world of Ezo in one of the best open-world action-adventures of recent years.
Aside from that, Ghost of Yotei continues the pleasant tradition of Sony’s first-party titles, offering even more gameplay value by including a brand-new single-player roguelike combat-survival mode. Most Wanted brings several playable characters, including the legendary Ghost of Tsushima himself, Jin Sakai. Each comes with a distinct combat style, weapons, abilities, and dedicated progression to master as the challenges grow increasingly difficult. Honestly, at this point, Sony’s roguelike tradition is too good to abandon.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 probably isn’t the first game that comes to mind when discussing the strongest titles from Capcom’s current winning streak, yet it shouldn’t be completely written off either. The ambitious Dark Arisen expansion-slash-overhaul might just become the game’s confident comeback, especially given that Capcom has already taken some notable steps toward improving its reception. Reducing the price and removing the endless list of paid DLC for good were the right calls, so now it’s up to the expansion to offer enough meat for starved fans.
And judging by all the signs, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen aims to deliver just that. The expansion not only adds the new snowy northern region of Norgan and its dedicated storyline, but is also set to enrich the base game with new dungeon challenges known as the Lost Rites, filled with secrets and rare equipment. With greater danger and difficulty, as well as new monsters, exploration in Dark Arisen should also be more rewarding than ever, as players can claim forgotten relics that unlock powerful new skills.
