gamescom 2026 Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Preview: A Big Step for the Franchise

When it comes to metroidvania games, there’s no better than Castlevania. I mean, it’s in the name. This is a franchise that has been going on for over forty years at this point, with the original release truly revolutionizing the action-adventure genre.

Ever since its conception, we have seen various games come and go with the franchise, most of which retain the beautiful artwork and 2D aesthetic, while others, such as Lords of Shadow, broke off a bit from the norm. With that said, it has been over a decade since Konami published a true new Castlevania game, so players have been itching to get back into it.

Thankfully, they won’t have to wait long, as the Japanese publisher has teamed up with Evil Empire, a small studio best known for helping with the development of the Dead Cells DLC and The Rogue Prince of Persia.

For those familiar with the Casltevania formula, you’ll feel right at home here. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse plays very similarly to previous Castlevania games, but with a bit of a twist. This is very much a 2D action-adventure game with a little bit of platforming and backtracking.

Players will take control of Rose Belmont. As the name implies, she is a descendant of the long line of Belmont characters, starting all the way back with Leon Belmont in the PlayStation 2 game, Lament of Innocence. She is a very capable warrior who is traversing the beautifully destroyed ruins of Paris.

Paris itself is ripe for exploration, as there’s a bunch of paths that are very apparent require a bit of backtracking. It’s not all about taking down enemies, as there’s quite a few puzzles and platforming sections that need to be thoughtfully resolved.

In terms of combat, this isn’t too far off from a traditional side-scrolling metroidvania. Rose will have her trusty sword to deal combo-based attacks on enemies, but she will also have some magic abilities.

It’s not just a button masher, as there’s a new Tarot Card system that has been implemented. This ties directly into the magic abilities, such as starting with a fireball and eventually working up to more advanced skills and abilities. In addition to having more abilities to equip, Rose can also upgrade these to do more damage or add different effects, making combat a little more involved.
