Marvel Snap’s long-awaited Draft mode has only been out for a few days, but its impact cannot be understated.
The card battler’s RNG-based mode where players draft a deck from set starter packs to try and win five matches has been a huge success with long-time players, and it’s even brought many back into the fold, judging by community sentiment and even Steam charts.
The game has hovered around 2,000 to 3,000 CCU for much of the past year, but Draft’s inception on Monday skyrocketed daily players to over 7,000, proving that gamers have been coming back to try it out. And those who have tried it have had a lot of good things to say about it.
Judging by posts on sites like Reddit, Twitter/X, and even general vibes in Twitch chatrooms, Draft is one of the best additions the game has had in a long time. And the devs at Second Dinner anticipated this being the case, too, going all-in on advertising and freebies to get players back into the fold, including three free decks full of cards that new players likely wouldn’t have for quite some time.
But unfortunately, for now, Draft is just a limited-time game mode like Grand Arena or High Voltage before it, not a full-time option like Conquest. With player reaction being so positive, though, I would think that some conversations are being had at Second Dinner on how to keep it around all the time.
The main issues with this would likely be further splitting the player population, creating matches with more bots than anyone would like, and a rework of how the mode’s rewards system works. Right now, the mode has a lucrative rewards track like any other LTGM in the game, and it’s built around that with an economy and currency to match it. It may take some time, but the devs must be considering it at this point. I think announcing future plans to make it full-time would go a long way with keeping players happy, too.
Draft, as I said after playing it early thanks to Second Dinner a few weeks ago, is the hyper-casual mode the game has needed for a while. It’s over-the-top, random, and silly, but most importantly it’s fun and easy to access, whereas ladder matches often feel punishing as new or inexperienced players quickly run into cards and decks they don’t have access to. Draft levels the playing field and makes it pure mayhem.
There’s hope for the mode sticking around, I think. When I spoke to Second Dinner devs, they told me that the mode’s future largely depended on player reaction and its success, and it’s still very much a fluid addition to the game. Well, if that’s the case, then there’s plenty of reason to consider keeping it around all the time rather than trickling it in two-week spurts throughout the year.
