There's a moment every year in Final Fantasy XIV that feels different from everything else the game offers. The Rising, which ran this year from August 27 to September 11, is officially an anniversary event – a celebration of A Realm Reborn's relaunch, where the people of Eorzea pay tribute to those lost in the Seventh Umbral Calamity. In practice, for the community that has built its life around this game, it tends to become something more personal than that. It becomes a mirror. A moment to look back at how far you've come, what you've carried with you, and who you've brought along.
I've written before about how MMORPGs fill a gap that modern life has made harder to fill – the gap left by the kinds of communities that used to form more naturally, in the spaces between work and obligation. Final Fantasy XIV has become one of the most remarkable examples of a game doing exactly that. The Rising is the point in the year when that becomes most visible, and the community responses the EU Community Discord provided make that clearer than anything I could say myself.
The Rising exists because Final Fantasy XIV has a history worth commemorating. A Realm Reborn's relaunch in 2013 followed the near-total failure of version 1.0, and the decision to essentially rebuild the game from the ground up rather than walk away from it produced something that became more than a recovery story. It became the foundation for a game that has, over more than a decade, accumulated layers of meaning that most live service games never come close to.
The event itself – city-states decorated, side stories on the Lodestone, the Wandering Minstrel as its recurring anchor, Naoki Yoshida himself woven into its narrative – treats its own history with a reverence that players have picked up and reflected back. This year's rewards included the Wind-up Wuk Lamat minion, furnishings carrying the Rising's branding across multiple years, and a set of orchestrion rolls that spanned the franchise's history from Matoya's Cave to Zanarkand. Even the reward structure tells you a lot about what the event is for.
Various members of the EU Community Discord responded to an inquiry about the anniversaries they hold dear in Final Fantasy XIV, and the responses painted a picture of a game that has embedded itself into people's lives in ways that go well beyond gameplay milestones.
J started playing on the day Patch 5.3 launched and has since come to think of The Rising as their character's anniversary – a fitting overlap, given what the event is for. "I like the opportunity to recall my feelings playing through MSQ for the first time," they told us. "For The Rising I really like the way the theme of 'remembering the fallen' is handled. It feels like something of a reset and fresh start. It's really cathartic." Sometimes they use New Game+ to replay Main Scenario Quest content on expansion anniversaries too, a ritual of return that the game's design makes unusually easy.
