Elta Defy All Gods Hands-On Preview: Metroid Prime Meets God of War

Elta Defy All Gods Hands-On Preview: Metroid Prime Meets God of War

I had no idea what I signed up for when I went to check out Afterburner Studios' and Focus Entertainment's newly revealed third-person Metroidvania brawler at Gamescom, but after playing for about an hour, the PR associates had to pull me out of my chair (not really). But honestly, out of all the games I checked out at the German convention, Elta: Defy All Gods was my favorite and the only one I wanted to spend hours with (or just take the game home with me). Unfortunately, I have to wait until it comes out in 2027, like the rest of you.

And interestingly enough, out of the games I checked out, Elta is probably the one that's going to be the most slept on, especially out of all the reveals at Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live showcase. When I walked around the show floor and mentioned to my peers that I played it, most of them had no idea what I was talking about.

Maybe it's the title of the game, the fact that it's a brand-new IP from a relatively unknown developer, or that it was literally just announced a few weeks ago. I don't know! But what I do know is that even with the small amount of time I had with Elta: Defy All Gods, it gave me exactly what I wanted the lackluster Metroid Prime 4 to be, but with a sick-ass brawler combat system reminiscent of God of War. But am I crazy to say that I kinda like the combat even more than Sony's famed series? (Oh, I can smell the hate comments now...)

Just to set up the story a little bit, you're playing as an elite monk who was chosen by his people to go out on a quest to save his civilization by finding a fallen dragon god named Spyro- I mean, Elta (he really reminds me of Spyro). This cute little green dragon is weak at first, but by finding key items throughout your adventure, he'll level up and gain new powers to help you out.

In the preview build we played, Elta could help you jump a bit further when you're platforming with a fluttering ability; you can also use its tongue as a grappling hook to reach new heights; but my all-time favorite thing that Elta can do is during combat. You can grapple onto enemies to pull them close to you, or you can launch yourself at them to do all sorts of things like punch or kick (you get a bunch of combat options thanks to the Skill Tree).

The combat itself is just as satisfying as using Elta, and it’s easily one of the game’s biggest draws. You can feel the weight and power behind every move, with even the fastest punches and kicks landing with real force. It genuinely excited me every time a new group of enemies showed up.

And that's not even bringing into account the special skills you'll learn playing as Victus that can be found underneath the Kinetica section of the menu.

These are all-powerful attacks that can be equipped to deal devastating damage to enemies, and later on, you will find attachable Prisms that you can mix and match with these special attacks, changing up the effects. For example, the first Kinetica I learned is called The Rising Spire, which delivers a fierce uppercut that launches enemies into the air.
