The Mortal Kombat franchise is no stranger to creative collaborations and crossovers over the years, which has even seen several games featuring the entire roster facing up against heroes and villains from other franchises. Putting aside the DC Universe spinoff and iconic film stars that have made their way into more recent Mortal Kombat games, one of the series' oldest collaborations has been left to rot over the years.
Thankfully, coinciding with the franchise getting a modern resurgence thanks to the Mortal Kombat 2 film released back in May, a fan-made mod is finally bringing back a PlayStation exclusive fighter for more players to experience for themselves.
Originally released as a PlayStation 3 exclusive fighter for Mortal Kombat 9, RaikouRosario94 on X shared their discovery of a recently released mod that fully ports Kratos from the original God of War trilogy back into the game.
Recreating Kratos as accurately as possible with a unique portrait, costumes, intro, fatalities, and more, the recently released mod is a fantastic addition to the classic fighting game, even with a few currently known bugs. If you want to download the mod for yourself, you can do so by checking out its official upload by NexusMods user NixonLai, although you'll also need Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition and the MK9Injector mod for it to work.
To this day, Kratos is the only Mortal Kombat guest character to originate from another video game franchise.
While Kratos' latest roster appearance doesn't include the original PlayStation 3-exclusive stage that was added alongside the guest fighter, fans in the comments of the original NexusMod posts have already made their desire to have the arena ported over as well. While there's no word from the modder yet on whether the map will come at some point, it would be a fantastic pairing for the fan-favorite fighter.
With a wide arsenal of weapons and incredibly flashy moves, the Kratos Mortal Kombat mod makes it all the more apparent how tragic it was that the original fighter was locked away on a single console for so long. Even now that PC players have access to the expanded roster thanks to fans, Xbox players will still be unable to access the content indefinitely.
Although these kinds of limited-edition characters and content are thankfully more or less a thing of the past, thanks to DLC letting you unlock limited characters at the drop of a hat, there is still no shortage of characters and exclusive content from fighting games even outside of Mortal Kombat that many fans will never have the chance to experience for themselves without the help of community creators like these.
