If I asked you to name an MMORPG made by Square Enix based on the Final Fantasy franchise, what would spring to mind first? Probably Final Fantasy 14, right? Indeed, in the current age, Final Fantasy 14 has become one of the definitive MMORPG experiences, rivaling even the likes of World of Warcraft in player numbers and breadth of content. However, 14 isn’t the only Final Fantasy MMO on the block; there’s also Final Fantasy 11.
Final Fantasy 11 has been in operation since all the way back in 2002, bolstered in part by modern graphics mods, though with the release of the Echoes of Vana'diel raids in 14’s Dawntrail expansion in 2025, the game received a sudden, massive influx of new players. Like, so massive, Square Enix actually had to close off several of the game’s servers to new character creations. I guess that’s a good problem to have?
As one of Final Fantasy 14’s big selling points is its surprisingly generous free trial period, it seems Square Enix has decided to take a similar step with 11. Today, on the official Final Fantasy 11 website, the company announced that the game’s free trial period is having its time limit removed, allowing players to play indefinitely up to a level cap, which has also been raised.
Previously, Final Fantasy 11’s free trial period lasted only 14 days. Once your complimentary two weeks were up, that was it; either you pay the full subscription to keep playing with your created character, or you get lost. As of today, though, that time limit has been completely axed.
“Now you can play the game at your own pace without having to worry about the free trial period expiring,” the announcement reads. “Take your time to level up your character and visit various areas in the game. This is your chance to go on adventures with your friends and get the most out of your life in Vana'diel.”
The announcement adds that any accounts that were previously made for free trial periods have been reactivated, so if you played in the trial previously and had it run out on you, you can pick it right back up with your previous character.
