Harry Potter fans like to hold up a few Wizarding World characters as the best witches and wizards in the fantasy franchise, with some of the most obvious candidates being Albus Dumbledore, Lord Voldemort, Hermione Granger, and Harry himself. However, there are many more characters out there that the Harry Potter fandom has been underestimating for years, despite the magical skill they show off at various points across the seven books.
The reason for this may be that these characters — Hogwarts students, professors, and beyond — are given the short straw in the film adaptations, or that they are just tertiary players in Harry's story who are easy to overlook. Either way, it's time to say "Finite Incantatem" to the Confundus Charm that's apparently keeping fans from noticing just how powerful some of these characters really are.
Neville Longbottom's enormous potential is the Harry Potter universe's biggest what-if. Although the full depth of his importance is skirted over in the films, the books make it clear that Professor Trelawney's prophecy could have referred to either Harry or Neville, and it was only Voldemort's decision to go after the Potters that ensured Harry became his nemesis, rather than Neville.
Even with his aborted alternate destiny, Neville grows into an extremely proficient wizard all the same. His slaying of Nagini during the Battle of Hogwarts is legendary, ensuring he belongs to a very small club of wizards who have destroyed Horcruxes, and as an adult, he is adept enough to become a Hogwarts professor. Neville replaces Pomona Sprout as Herbology teacher and takes over from Minerva McGonagall as head of Gryffindor house.
Another character who received a defining moment during the Battle of Hogwarts was Molly Weasley. Up until that point, Molly had been portrayed as a nurturing and loving mother first and foremost and wasn't suggested to be a particularly gifted witch. During the final battle, however, Molly displays a hitherto-unknown proficiency in dueling, not to mention a ruthless side when it comes to protecting her loved ones.
Molly's big moment is, of course, her besting of Bellatrix Lestrange, as provoked by the dark witch attacking Ginny. Bellatrix is routinely depicted as one of Voldemort's most dangerous acolytes, so the fact that Molly was able to defeat her — with a killing curse, no less — speaks volumes. Clearly, Molly had the potential to be a formidable Auror, but her priorities lie mostly with her family.
Although Neville and Molly's big moments in the Battle of Hogwarts made it into the film adaptation of The Deathly Hallows, the same sadly can't be said for Filius Flitwick, meaning that most fans overlook the Charms professor's most impressive achievement. In the books, Flitwick defeats the Death Eater Antonin Dolohov in a duel. And that is no small feat, considering Dolohov is responsible for killing Remus Lupin.
Lupin was obviously a highly capable wizard, and the fact that Flitwick was able to defeat his murderer just goes to show the depth of the teacher's talents. Both the subject of Charms and Flitwick himself are often ignored by fans, but clearly a proficiency in Charms can go a long way. What's more, if you take the films' continuity into consideration, Flitwick is a skilled enough wizard to permanently change his entire appearance.
