The Fable series is one of the most beloved and influential in the gaming industry, and yet it is stupidly hard to find a way to play these games. Sure, they're all on Xbox Game Pass for console, but on PC, you can only play the first one. If you get lucky, you might be able to find a PC copy of Fable 3 as well, but that's it.
Fable 2 never received a PC port and remained Xbox 360 exclusive. However, some fans are trying to change that, decompiling Fable 2 so that it can run on PC as if it were an official port. We've reported on the progress of one of these attempts before, and can now say that another one has reached a big milestone: the game can make it to the title screen, and you can go through the main menu.
Coming to us courtesy of Reddit user whompay, this appears to be different from the other decompiling Fable 2 project we reported on last year. That can still be viewed on GitHub, and has been updated this year, so we may have two on the go now.
Whompay, on the other hand, appears to be working solo. This video is our first look at their project, and they've set up a subreddit if you want to keep track of their progress.
This initial video will be a very familiar sight to anyone who played Fable 2 back in the day, as we can see the splash screens and title screen showing as normal. The player then navigates through the menus, but the game crashes when they're selecting their hero.
The main takeaway here is that the game can boot up at all. Unlike other ways of playing on PC, this build isn't running on an Xbox 360 emulator - it is actually playing Fable 2 natively. That means it will be a lot harder for fans to get it up and running.
We have seen this done with other games, like Sonic Unleashed, which was ported so well that the fan devs even added achievement support and performance improvements. Hopefully, Fable 2 can join its ranks one day, especially as it seems Microsoft has no interest in an official PC port.
