I have been playing video games since I was old enough to hold a controller. Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire were the first RPGs that truly resonated with me and stole hours of my time. I spent my first big paycheck on a Nintendo Switch, and I'm lamenting the loss of PlayStation discs like the rest of you out there. Needless to say, the overall state of the gaming industry is pretty dire right now. But I never expected that one of the physical manifestations of a miracle, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, would be leading the charge somehow.

Don't get me wrong. I called Final Fantasy VII Revelation a miracle and I mean it. It's going to be a game that will define the next several years of gaming beyond it. None of us will be able to put it down, and any JRPG after it will never recapture the impact it had on us, especially those of us who have been invested in Final Fantasy VII for a while. It'll be even more special for those of us who played the original. Don't worry on that front, either. I'm one of said people. But as we mark the end of this spectacular journey that's managed to beat all the odds and capture everything that made the original great, it also leans into some unhealthy aspects of this industry that have shown up since it began.

The fact that there's no full physical copy of Final Fantasy VII Revelation available is saddening and concerning. But I'm also deeply upset about the game's fast forward feature for cutscenes, and you should be, too.

Leading up to the recent State of Play that gave an extended look at the third and final game of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, a lot of fans were breathing sighs of relief. They hoped Revelation's 2027 release date would keep it from being limited by Sony's lack of PlayStation disc production in 2028. Now that we have more info, though, we now know FFVII Revelation isn't safe. There is only one disc for this installment, and it comes with the dreaded "additional download required" warning. This applies to the Xbox Series S/X versions, too, so there's no data disc to save us this time. Instead, we have to hope and pray servers and storefronts will be around to catch any players who join in later. Sony has just recently begun closing the PlayStation Store for the PS3 and PS Vita, by the way. Just while we're on the subject.

In some ways, this makes sense. Revelation is set to be the biggest game it possibly could be, promising to allow you to revisit the entire planet of Gaia with new quests, odd jobs, and storylines. But I really don't see why we don't have a data disc this time when Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth not only got by with data discs, but included special art on them as well. Final Fantasy VII just works as a multi-disc adventure, and leaving the third installment without a second disc just feels like we're cheapening out on a complete collection and experience in all sorts of ways.

Don't even get me started on the situation the Switch 2 is in. We got saddled with game key cards for the entire journey, and I'm not happy with it. To a degree, the Switch 2 is the one console that needs downloads for the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy the most. But I have Rebirth on my Switch 2, and its size demanded I buy an SD card just to leave space for any other games I choose to download with my consumer choice. I dread trying to fit both Rebirth and Revelation on the same console. Hopefully my partner has their own PC to play on instead by then. Do you hear how ridiculous that concern is, when there are other options Square Enix could have left open for us?

There were more details revealed about Revelation than just this disclaimer attached to pre-orders. In an in-depth overview, I had to listen to a narrator somewhat enthusiastically introduce a fast-forward feature to Final Fantasy VII Revelation's cutscenes. I shouldn't have to explain what's wrong with that. If you call yourself a gamer, or fight with people online over how you can't call yourself a fan of a gaming franchise if you've never played any of the games it has on offer, if you're fine with going through the last disc of FF7 with voice-acted dialogue at twice the speed.
