The Vampire Counts received a major overhaul to their core systems in Update 9.0 for Total War: Warhammer 3, and if you've been holding off on trying this faction out, now's a good time to start. The update introduced significant changes to how the Vampire Counts' campaign mechanics work, giving them a more cohensive theme and a much better experience overall when it comes to managing their settlements and armies. If you're wondering what's new with the Vampire Counts in TWW3, here's a breakdown of all their new and reworked mechanics.
Apart from the Dark Magic that has served as the Vampire Counts' main currency throughout the faction's history in Total Warhammer, players must now also manage two more currencies: Corpses and Blood.
Corpses are gained after every battle, but they can also be produced passively by building Bone Pits. Battles are the superior source of Corpses, but during times of peace, you will likely have to rely on your Bone Pits to generate this currency.
Blood, on the other hand, is much rarer. This is mainly produced by building Catacombs of Woes, which converts Corpses into Blood every turn. Campaign actions like the Harvest Corpses decree in your settlements will also provide you with additional Blood per turn, but for the most part, Catacombs of Woes will be your main source of this currency.
Corpses are used to raise undead units like Zombies and Skeletons, while Blood is required for a variety of different Vampire Counts mechanics, including summoning high-tier units (like Blood Knights and Hexwraiths), starting Research, and awakening Vampire Lords. To maintain a strong economy, you need to balance the production of all three Vampire Counts currencies.
Corpses are a provincial currency, so you won't be able to immediately raise huge legions of the undead while you're out conquering hostile territory.
Players can now instantly recruit undead units directly to their army through the recruitment menu by spending either Corpses or Blood. You can summon any number of these units per turn, so long as you don't exceed any unit caps, and that you have enough resources to toss at them. Human units like Sylvanian Handgunners and Crossbowmen don't count as undead, and they are recruited normally.
Despite costing Blood or Corpses, the upkeep of Vampire Count units is still paid for using Dark Magic, further emphasizing the need to balance all three of the faction's currencies.
