Open-world role-playing games remain among the most popular and widely discussed titles in the gaming community, thanks to an emphasis on the freedom to play in your own style and at your own pace. As the genre continues to evolve, it’s not surprising that its definition has become increasingly broad and fragmented, covering everything from soulslikes to party-based games. Each year brings numerous big, ambitious titles pushing the boundaries, and next year won’t be an exception.
Naturally, we don’t know the full 2027 gaming schedule just yet, so nothing below is set in stone. While all the titles listed are targeting next year for launch, it’s entirely possible for some to slip further. Likewise, more open-world RPGs currently in development could still be announced for 2027. There may also be ambitious projects we know nothing about yet, some of which could easily emerge as “the next big thing.” With all that out of the way, here are some of the most intriguing new open-world RPGs officially announced for launch sometime next year.
One of the few open-world RPGs that already has a firmly set release date for next year, Fable launches on February 23, 2027, following its delay from the previous fall 2026 window. With several extra months in the oven, the game has a chance to become one of the most polished releases in the genre in quite some time. Considering the project’s ambitions and the footage showcased so far, this one looks really promising.
Unlike the majority of combat-focused RPGs in the pipeline, Fable seems like a very different breed, centered on its reactive world and handcrafted NPCs with fixed traits and personalities. As a result, it might just become the rare open-world RPG where simply living in Albion and exploring all its social intricacies is as exciting as smashing another giant toad boss over the head with a disproportionately big sword.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation needs little introduction by now, standing as the final and potentially most content-packed entry in the iconic FF7 modern remake trilogy. The game is scheduled to launch in spring 2027, marking one of the shortest gaps between such massive, 100-hour projects in modern gaming. Given the astounding amount and variety of content these games offer, alongside their cinematic presentation across the board, that turnaround is quite an achievement.
Following in Rebirth’s footsteps, FF7 Revelation shows no signs of scaling things back, promising an epochal final battle against Sephiroth with the full iconic cast finally united, including newly playable party members Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine. Combat also looks more layered than ever, with new abilities and an even more refined blend of real-time action and command-based combat. One of the biggest draws is your very own airship, the Highwind, allowing seamless exploration of a richly interconnected world spanning multiple biomes.
Outward 2 had long been expected to launch in Early Access this summer, but following the fairly divisive beta, the team decided to delay the project into 2027 for extra work. As of now, no narrower window is available beyond that, and the game is still expected to launch in Early Access first, with the full release potentially following months, if not years, later.
With such a long road still ahead, Outward 2 has a chance to build on the original’s strengths, as the first game became a sleeper hit over time, drawing thousands of players into its harsh, unrestricted, sandbox-like world. By combining the team’s previous experience with ongoing community feedback, Outward 2 could become something truly special among survival RPGs or, as the developers describe it, “the ultimate simulation of an adventurer’s life.” For this one, taking extra time was definitely the right call.
