The Pokémon Trading Card Game continues to thrive in the modern market despite the adoption of digital alternatives in many walks of life. It doesn't take long to figure out why the Pokémon TCG bucks this trend, though, because nothing comes close to actually holding cards designed by your favorite artists, of your favorite pocket monsters.
This iconic TCG started with only three recurring artists, but they had all the freedom they needed to express themselves and create art that players could fall in love with so easily. Illustrating Pokémon cards isn't always about creating the cutest art possible. Sometimes Pokémon are creatures to be feared, or carry a certain mystique that leaves a lot up to the imagination. This is where Muosho's art excels. With only 17 cards illustrated at the time of writing, but hopefully many more to come, many of these play on the more sinister aspects of a Pokémon's possible intentions.
Nothing is explicitly drawn, but taking the full-art Ghastly from Temporal Forces or Poltchageist from Pitch Black as an example, these cards give off very unsettling vibes, and we love them for that.
With beautiful, bright, light colors and scenery that'll remind you of the magic hour, Nitanda does a brilliant job of making soft, full artwork that looks like a dream. Their signature art style is easy to recognize once you see it, and you've most likely seen the Prismatic Evolutions Sylveon ex.
The details in that Sylveon ex alongside the colors make for one of the most beautiful cards in Pokémon for the Eevee evolution. With lots of pinks and oranges, light blues and yellows, each card designed by Nitanda feels soft and fluffy, reminding you of a beautiful horizon or a pink wonderland.
An artist who can showcase their range in the Pokémon TCG, Iwamoto creates gorgeous scenes and tells a story with their artwork, even when it's just an image of a well-known Pokémon. One of their best traits is giving Pokémon life and personality through emotion in their artwork.
