Morrowind is not only one of the best games in The Elder Scrolls, but is one of the best RPGs and open-world games, period. Its glazers can get annoying, but they are correct; there are so many things that Morrowind just does right. The problem is that Morrowind is a really hard game to play, and its essential gameplay mechanics have not aged well.
The best parts of Morrowind are its story, characters, lore, spells, and setting. These are all features that can easily be faithfully replicated in a remake and bring Morrowind to a new audience. It's an incredible game that is absolutely worth its barriers to entry, but sometimes those barriers just have to be removed. Here are some reasons why Morrowind deserves a remake.
Oblivion Remastered had its glaring issues, such as game-breaking bugs and a lack of support in the months following its release, but it was largely well-received. It did a particularly good job at updating its visuals and combat, while still retaining the janky charm that's made it beloved.
All in all, Oblivion Remastered was successful in bringing it to modern audiences, while balancing the expectations of its longtime fans. I loved revisiting Cyrodiil, and had to stop and just admire how beautiful the towns and landscapes that were integral to my childhood looked with modern graphics. Morrowind deserves a similar update and a reminder of just how creative and interesting The Elder Scrolls can become.
Morrowind's story starts out like every other Elder Scrolls game where you're a prisoner, jailed for an unknown crime. You land on the shores of Vvardenfell, an island in Morrowind, and immediately begin the process of being freed on the order of the Emperor. What follows is one of Bethesda's best stories.
Skyrim and Fallout 4 are popular games, but this is in spite of their main storylines. Morrowind offers great side content as well as an excellent story, with events that were triggered centuries before. It also includes some of the best characters in The Elder Scrolls, lets you meet legendary characters from the lore like Vivec and Barenziah, and gives you one of the most personal relationships with a Daedric Prince.
For as complex as The Elder Scrolls' lore is, the main storylines in the games are often fairly straightforward, especially in Skyrim. Morrowind's questline raises questions of prophecy, fate, reincarnation, politics, and divinity. Perhaps one of the most interesting questions it poses is whether or not you believe in the prophecy of the Nerevarine, and if you really are Nerevar.
