Gamescom 2026: Rainbow 6 Tactics Coming in 2027

Since the late '90s, the Rainbow Six series has delivered more tactical first-person shooting thrills than any other franchise - and the rise of mobile gaming has seen it expand into things like more casual-friendly action with Rainbow Six Smol providing a 70/30 mix of shooting and strategy. At Gamescom 2026, Ubisoft France started the event off strong with the announcement of Rainbow Six Tactics - a new genre for Ubisoft in some ways outside of the Mario Rabbid Kingdom collabs on Switch and the first time the mainline series will have a non-shooter game.

The presentation went from video clips of commands being called out and then executed in the X-Com-style overhead viewpoint, which can be moved around a bit. When the word Tactics is used, it's either going to be that view or the more restrained Final Fantasy Tactics/Tactics Ogre isometric viewpoint with some adjustments - and from what little was shown in continuous motion, it appears this will be more like X-Com in that regard and allow players to see the environment from more angles.

This comes in handy for tactical games because you need to see where everyone is at in relation to the environment, although there is an extra challenge in not having that freedom to work with. For player fun and accessibility, it's generally better to see more of the world - and it makes more sense logically with this being a game that takes place in something resembling a real-world environment. Ubisoft did an exceptional job with the Rabbids games and that offers a glimpse into the kind of pace we'll see with Rainbow Six Tactics.

For a tactical game, they were incredibly fast-paced and the second entry was a bit of a trendsetter when it came to accessibility in that genre because it allowed the game to basically play itself and become a story mode of sorts and it will be interesting to see if that approach is taken for R6 Tactics. Of Ubisoft's suite of IPs, R6 is a logical one to do this with, but the real-world setting means that there is a chance of other Ubisoft IPs being used for it.

I can easily see the Watch_Dogs main characters for 1 and 2 featured in this as DLC, or at least as skins. There wasn't a ton formally announced for R6 Tactics, but we do know it will get a 2027 release and based on the history of the series, it should at least see a PC, PS5, and Xbox Sereis release.
