You can get more ability slots by leveling up certain perks in each skill tree in The Blood of Dawnwalker. This might sound simple, but keep in mind spending skill points usually consumes time and the game is time-sensitive.
Abilities are special skills Coen can use to deal extra damage or to better protect himself against attacks. There are a lot of abilities in each skill tree, but you can't equip all of them as there are limited slots at the beginning. Which is why it's important to figure out how to increase ability slots in The Blood of Dawnwalker.
To increase Witchcraft ability slots in The Blood Of Dawnwalker, unlock the Forbidden Sigils perk. You need to first unlock the Unnatural Resilience skill, which increases armor when any witchcraft ability is active. This unlocks the Forbidden Sigils skill that helps increase the number of Witchcraft ability slots.
Similar to the Witchcraft skill tree, you need to unlock one perk before increasing the Swordmastery ability slots. Once the Sustained Focus perk is available, you can access the Master Fencer, which allows you to have more ability slots. It also won't be a complete loss to sacrifice skill points at the shrine for Sustained Focus, as it increases the number of activation charges.
Thankfully, you only need to spend skill points in the Vrakhiri Might perk to increase the number of Vampiric ability slots in The Blood of Dawnwalker. Unlike the previous skill tree, Coen must increase his corruption level by drinking blood directly from enemies or through other means like vials. Killing a powerful Vrakhiri also increases the corruption level significantly.
Check out some Prologue quests in The Blood of Dawnwalker like Enter Not Quest, Disturbed Quest, and Someone Needs A Lesson.
