In a very interesting tidbit from Tokyo Game Show, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will apparently feature an automatic level-up system, designed specifically for players who just want to experience the main story.
Via an interview with IGN Japan, as translated by Genki, director Naoki Hamaguchi spills the beans on said system, which appears as an option at a "certain point in the game".
Basically, you'll be able to raise your party members' strength to a "recommended" level, allowing players to push on with the plot even if they haven't dabbled in optional side content.
Hamaguchi says that the decision to implement this was taken after receiving feedback through Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Supposedly, some people complained about being underpowered for key story battles, having skipped side quests and the like.
So, in theory, if you want to just blast through Revelation's main narrative, this option is the answer.
But part of me is sitting here wondering how much value Revelation will actually offer if you decide to ignore its massive open world. Based on everything Square Enix has shown up until now, this is a map that's meant to be explored.
Not only that, there are clearly a lot of character-specific interactions tied to side objectives. Worst case scenario, you'll be missing out on a lot of character building if you're sprinting to every main objective marker.
Still, I suppose it's nice to be given a choice. Rebirth did end up attracting quite a bit of criticism for its rampant use of minigames, but to be fair, Revelation was already set to address those complaints — at least to some extent — by limiting minigame and side activity rewards to non-combat related prizes.
