It's not looking great for Destiny 3. Or anything else, really.
It’s really not looking great for Bungie, or its franchises Marathon and Destiny, and it hasn’t for quite some time.
But the latest revelation that the PlayStation-owned studio is looking to sublease its 200,000-plus square-foot Bellevue, Washington headquarters is the latest and saddest chapter in the saga of the downfall of a once-great studio that’s been gutted multiple times over.
The Destiny franchise is either dead or on permanent hiatus after the ending of Destiny 2’s live-service updates earlier this year, and Marathon continues to fail to make a dent in its own attempt at a foothold in the industry. And now, this.
According to a 10-page commercial leasing brochure (spotted by The Game Post), the sublease covers 210,984 square feet through 2035. This means that the owner of the building is looking to rent out parts of it that have since likely been vacated by the studio that used to total around 1,600 workers at its peak. Several waves of layoffs have shaved that number down quite a bit.
The brochure lists all of the details of the building and its contents, including “a war room, stress room, regeneration room, tape vault, IT build area, focus and phone rooms, wellness rooms, a specialized collaboration area,” plus “multiple audio studios, four 12-person playtest rooms, a central cafe, catering space, showers, nap and personal rooms, and a private exterior patio.”
Bungie reportedly spent “hundreds of millions” of dollars expanding the HQ from its original 84,000 square-foot size, putting the company in a hole that it’s had a tough time digging out from, even after its massive $3.7 billion acquisition by Sony.
“Everyone I talk to says that of the financial mistakes at Bungie, building this insane campus was one of the biggest,” Forbes’ Paul Tassi said. “Like this is where a bunch of ‘when Destiny was profitable’ money went.”
