Marvel’s Wolverine players are only just noticing some of the subtle (and not-so-subtle) foreshadowing that teases the story’s biggest plot twists.
Although not everyone was a fan, I’d say that one of the greatest strengths of Marvel’s Wolverine is its surprisingly dark, personal, and consequential story. Logan’s journey of self-discovery and reluctant heroism is mostly excellent and has more than its fair share of twists and turns for both newcomers and Marvel veterans.
Of course, anyone who knows the name Nathaniel Essex is inevitably going to be less surprised at how things play out, but there are still plenty of other moments that you likely won’t see coming. Insomniac clearly knew this and had some fun with it, as players are highlighting several examples of clever foreshadowing that only make sense on a replay.
I hopefully don't need to tell you this, but don't read on if you haven't finished Marvel's Wolverine yet.
Over on Twitter, Insomniac Games community director James Stevenson finally got a break from all the discourse by highlighting a thread about all of the foreshadowing in Marvel’s Wolverine. Twitter user cattybatty202 kicked things off by pointing out that the very first mission hints at Essex not actually being a mutant by letting him pass through a detector without setting it off.
The same user then showed that Walter’s defection is teased in the next mission, as you can find books that suggest he’s learning Japanese and have a conversation where he mentions The Hand. As if those weren’t enough, cattybatty202 also noted that Essex purposefully locks Logan out of his farmhouse memories when introducing Nightmare Doors to keep him from learning the truth.
One user pointed out that this actually introduces a bit of a plot hole, since Essex surely wouldn’t put Logan on a path to recovering his memories if he was worried about him learning the truth. I guess you could argue he wants to keep control of the made-up memories...
After cattybatty202 blew everyone’s minds, other players shared what they noticed, such as HlNOMARUSUMO pointing out that Essex clearly recognised Jean in their first meeting. Volatile_Vi highlighted that Logan and Jean’s past relationship is pretty clearly teased through her saying she recognises his face, while OnyxGl4ss said that Omega Red’s dialogue hints at Essex’s true nature.
