Coward's Retreat is a tiny dungeon near the Blackridge Pass Beacon in Mortal Shell 2 with a neat little surprise for players who stumble upon it. This place is just a small hideout that a group of brigands uses, so it's not as long and winding as some of the others in Mortal Shell 2. However, if you fall for the trap that the brigands have laid, you might end up spending more time in Coward's Retreat than you normally would otherwise.
Before we begin, know that you can safely bypass the entire trap section in Coward's Retreat by avoiding the pitfall right in front of the dungeon's main entrance. If you walk along the sides of the wooden floor after getting off the elevator, you can head straight to the main loot room of this dungeon.
Now, if you did fall for the trap, the brigands will lock you in a cell and strip you of your weapons. To escape, pick up the Hideout Cage Key to your left, then open the cell door. Next, turn left and go down the tunnel to find a Chest Key on top of a stack of small cages. Use that key to open the locked chest containing all your weapons near the campfire.
If you bypass the trap upstairs and slaughter the bandits by the campfire, neither of the keys nor the weapons chest will appear below. You can still complete the dungeon normally, though.
Once you're all geared up, proceed through the tunnel and make your way back to the dungeon entrance. Use your equipped Sidearm to shoot the ropes holding the wooden bridge up, then cross the chasm. If you don't have any Resolve, smack the orange bulb on the nearby root to gain some.
Continue making your way up the path, and you'll find the gang of bandits resting near a fire. Beat them all, then open the chest to get a Laterite for upgrading your weapons.
You can shoot the pots near the brigands to wipe out all the weaker ones standing near them. Try not to hit them with your melee weapon though, as they'll likely knock you out of your Shell if you do.
There doesn't seem to be any secrets in Coward's Retreat, and the only worthwhile loot in it is the singular piece of Laterite from the chest. The bandits will drop Coin and Gloom like all the other enemies in the game, but there's nothing special about them.
