If you've ever wanted to speak to Roach and hear her speak right back, then you need to complete the Equine Phantoms quest in The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine. This secret side quest allows you to investigate an Umbra wraith with Roach, and you can even speak to your horse during the quest. If you're looking for the quest location and best possible outcomes with the choices you can make, then you'll find all you need to know right here!
To begin the Equine Phantoms quest, speak with Pinastri located at Pinastri's Hermitage, northeast of Dun Tynne Crossroads, and pinned on the map image above. Pinastri will tell you that an invisible demon haunts her, and you can use your Witcher Senses in her hut to examine dead moths and blood stains that lead toward some steps.
When speaking with Pinastri, make sure you haggle your price. When Pinastri says she can only pay with potatoes, tell her, "Don't need any pay." This will give you Proof of Generosity for "There Can Be Only One", and besides, what is a witcher going to do with 60 potatoes?
This will conclude your investigation, and you'll need to speak to Pinastri the hermit, who will then give you a common graytop brew to drink. After waking up, Geralt will discover that he can talk to animals, including Roach! Roach will investigate the area, so follow her, and she will deduce that an Umbra haunts Pinastri.
You will now need to chase the Umbra on horseback, so mount Roach and race to the Mont Crane Cemetery. You might have to reserve some stamina, as it's impossible to actually catch up to the Umbra, but continue following the horse and don't lose track, or else the mission fails.
When you arrive at the Mont Crane Cemetery, four apparitions will appear. These spectral panthers are weak to silver swords, so just hack and slash them to death, and you will then be able to examine the grave and reveal the Umbra knight from within.
Marcello Clerici, the Umbra, reveals that his spirit can only move on if Pinastri forgives him, but she refuses to do so after she witnessed him whip his horse to death. He begs for forgiveness, realizing that this rage-bound decision was something he deeply regrets, and that he only did it because he was desperate to win the tournament to give Pinastri and himself a better life, but his horse bucked him off.
Geralt then has two choices to make:
