After a ten-year-long journey, Final Fantasy 7 is set to finish off its remake trilogy next year with Revelation. It's an event that's been a long time coming. Ever since Square Enix showed off a modern recreation of the iconic Midgard opening sequence at 2005's E3, fans have been clamoring for an HD remake of Final Fantasy 7. Over 20 years later, we now have it, and it's shaping up to be a satisfying conclusion, if the previous remakes and previews are anything to go off of.

Earlier this month (September 2026) during PlayStations' State of Play, Square Enix announced two additional story DLCs coming to the game after release. The first being a DLC focused on Sephiroth, and another on Vincent and the Turks. Naturally, this immediately sent fans into speculation mode, wondering what this future content would look like, and if they'd serve as a continuation of Revelation's story, like Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children.

Speaking to director Naoki Hamaguchi, he would tell DualShockers via translator that their plan is for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation to complete the story in full. "You don't need the DLC in order to fully experience the tale we're trying to tell here," he said. "The DLC is really about learning more about the characters of Vincent and Sephiroth. Players may come away from these DLCs thinking about these characters differently, but it was never with the intent of rewriting the ending or making people see the ending in a different kind of way."

Still, the director has been careful not to reveal the timeframe of when the DLCs are set, even refusing to comment on if they take place in the present of Final Fantasy 7's timeline or the past.

Hamaghuchi and Square Enix have been very tight-lipped about any details regarding the post-launch content. However, the director would take to social media to share that the team started development on post-launch content after receiving requests after Rebirth noticeably didn't have any. He would also say in an interview with Video Games Chronicle that "It's best to imagine the DLC like what we did with Intermission," confirming once more that these will be deeper explorations of the characters instead of a continuation of the main story.

It's shaping up to be a satisfying conclusion, if the previous remakes and previews are anything to go off of.
