I feel like we've heard the term "embracing its roots" applied to so many gaming franchises over the past decade.
This isn't something exclusive to Gears of War: E-Day, though it certainly does apply here, as the game puts Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, and a gothic horror setting. If the recent multiplayer preview is any indication, The Coalition has certainly hit the mark thus far. PVP felt like old-school Gears of War, even with some changes to movement to make the game accessible.
The stand-out feature from that multiplayer preview, however, was the cooperative PvE elements in the new Horde Siege. It combines the excellent cover-based third-person shooter combat the franchise is known for along with some of the more successful elements of modern shooters. Horde Siege felt like a wonderful mix of old-school and new-school philosophies. Surely the same can be said about the campaign, right?
Well, to be honest, I'm not quite sure. I'm not afraid to admit that, as excited as I was to dive into the Gears of War: E-Day campaign preview, I couldn't help but feel disappointed.
I spent a little over an hour playing through the beginning of Act 2, where Marcus, Dom, and other members of Bravo squad are literally thrust into action. My first introduction is seeing them in street clothes before they don the COG armor we're more accustomed to. That said, there's still some ramping up taking place here; we're not even a full 24 hours into the Locust War.
As such, one thing that the gameplay does nail is the struggles the humans of Sera are facing. While we, as players, fully know what's happening (and how it resolves), those in the world of Gears of War don't. There's a struggle to determine what's most important, and we see some glimpses of humanity in a world that has just moved on from the Pendulum Wars. However, nothing was expanded upon too much here, with most of the game's storytelling and world-building taking place as we slowly walk our way down the level. It feels like Gears of War: E-Day is very proud of how the world looks, which honestly it should be, but sometimes I wonder if it's a little too proud.
