On September 22, 2026, Microsoft released its second wave of massive layoffs this year across Xbox Game Studios and other Microsoft-owned game development studios as detailed in an Xbox press release titled "Continuing Our Reset" by Microsoft Gaming COO Matt Booty.
The article revealed that nearly 300 Xbox gaming positions were being eliminated and that multiple studios are being restructured, with Bethesda Softworks now overseeing Obsidian Entertainment, Playground Games, and Turn 10 Studios merging into one studio, and King being expanded to oversee Microsoft Casual Games, among other changes.
However, arguably the most shocking development from this continued reset was the layoff of most of Halo Studios' employees and the announcement that Activision will now develop the next Halo game, potentially leading the Halo franchise to new heights... or further turmoil.
Ever since Halo: Combat Evolved first debuted as the original Xbox's launch title nearly 25 years ago, Halo has stood as Xbox's mascot franchise alongside the likes of Nintendo's Super Mario and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog, but the series hasn't been without its rough eras.
Ever since Bungie left Microsoft and management of the franchise was handed over to 343 Industries, now known as Halo Studios, the franchise was never able to reach the cultural or financially successful peaks that were seen during Bungie's tenure.
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary was a mixed-received remaster of CE, Halo 4 featured an emotional campaign with a multiplayer fans perceived as being too Call of Duty-like, Halo: The Master Chief Collection was broken at launch, Halo 5: Guardians had misleading marketing, microtransactions, and a terrible story, and Halo Infinite was limited by game engine restrictions and a lack of post-launch support.
Meanwhile, Halo: Spartan Assault, Halo: Spartan Strike, Halo Wars 2, and Halo: Fireteam Raven were fun spinoffs in their own right, but they failed to reach a large audience.
