Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave turned into an entry in the series with a lot of leads due to there being the four “lords” Theodora, Leda, Dietrich, and Cai, as well as the player avatar Eshmel. That’s not even counting the other faction leaders who end up playing pretty big parts. That’s great and all, but after going through the whole game, I feel like one stands out and feels like the real main character as a result of the way the story goes. Theodora stands out in the best way.
First, Theodora is the only real “royalty” we’re following from the Heroic Games arc in part one onward. This puts her on the same footing as many past protagonists like Marth, Eliwood, Eirika and Ephraim, and Chrom. It also means her narrative for much of the story tends to deal with the political intrigue, machinations, and conflicts that leaders face. There’s a sense of tradition being blended in to a existing story that also ends up feeling novel in different ways.
Next, because Theodora is a queen, it grants us as players access to more areas and elements of the first part of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. The first involves a whole part of the city of Dagsion that other main characters can’t enter during that portion of the story. That’s because only royalty can get in there. It’s a way of acknowledging her status and setting her apart. Theodora is also the only unit with access to a ship, offering access to areas of the world map others can’t reach. Yes, Dietrich does get limited use of one during his campaign, but that is for a set number of turns and for a specific portion of the map.
Speaking of the narrative, Intelligent Systems chose to make Theodora a more critical character in the Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave storyline in some ways. Each of the main characters is tied to certain lore elements in ways that offers insights into different background elements and plot threads. Using Dietrich as an example again, it gets into Fodlan and the Agarthan people referenced there. In her case, we get more insights into Troy, a character we meet in the introduction and Anatolia’s faction due to this heroine’s own ties to them. While we do learn some things as a result of the Anatolia paralogue present in all part one routes and Dietrich’s storyline, it can really feel like Theodora is an extra window into that.
But even more critically, and in as spoiler-free a fashion as possible, Theodora also feels like she matters more than the other Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave lead characters sometimes due to the events of the War Arc. Regardless of whether or not you played her route in the first portion or completed a paralogue for her there, she’s a pivotal figure and major guest in that second portion of the storyline. She ends being a big part of the reason the plot gets driven forward as a result of Eshmel and Fortuna tampering with the past to work toward a different present and future.
While Cai, Dietrich, and Leda are all great in their own ways and we see Eshmel as a figure influencing the future, Theodora comes across as the standout hero in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. Her unique gameplay elements and role mean access to different places. Her influence means she’s treated differently and granted access to an area in Dagsion. Her background means insights into more Dagda lore. And, whether you decide to make her your champion or not, Intelligent System’s story is going to reminder you of how important she is.
