During yesterday’s PlayStation State of Play presentation, which had some cool reveals like new GTA 6-themed controllers, Square Enix dropped a new trailer for the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. This trailer included, among other nifty details, the game’s official release date of April 8, 2027, across all major platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Unfortunately, as increasingly seems to be the case these days, this ostensibly good news is being stymied by some not-so-great news, particularly for those planning on buying the game physically.
Alongside the announcement of the release date, Square Enix also quietly divulged on its website that the physical version of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will still require a digital download and active internet connection in order to play on all consoles. This means that, even if you buy the physical edition, you won’t be able to play the game with just the disc. In the current climate of frustration with dwindling support for physical game releases, such a limitation on a major release is nothing short of agonizing.
According to Square Enix’s website, all physical versions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be sold on a single disc, with the exception of the Nintendo Switch 2 version, which will opt instead for the Game Key Card format that provides a download code when the cartridge is inserted into the console. For both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, an internet connection is required to download the necessary additional data in order to run the game after the disc is inserted.
It’s not hard to guess the practical reason for this: the game is 130 GB big, and a single optical disc can’t store all of that mess. Ergo, the disc will likely contain either a small fraction of the game’s data, with the download making up the difference, or a simple download code to retrieve the lion’s share of the files from your respective console store.

What’s mildly mind-boggling about this, though, is that previous games in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy circumvented this issue by simply releasing on multiple discs, much like how the original Final Fantasy 7 on the original PlayStation released on three discs.
