Despite receiving no shortage of positive critical reviews for offering an excellent take on the beloved franchise for dedicated fans and new moviegoers alike, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was still perceived as a flop by its distributors. While Paramount-Skydance has all but abandoned the project after failing to reach financial expectations, the creators of the beloved film still haven't given up on continuing the series.
While there have been vague talks or glimmers of hope that we might see a return to the classic tabletop game in live-action form once more, a recent interview between the two directors of the film, John Daley and Jonathan Holdstein, and The Playlist offers one of the most promising updates we've heard in years.
As noted in the interview, the directors of the Dungeons & Dragons film confirmed that not only have they already finished the screenplay for the sequel, but that "Hasbro is a big believer in it," with the only obstacle being to "figure out a studio partner to make it work."
Even the producers themselves are apparently fully on board with the project as well, leaving the funding offered by a larger studio the last thing needed before the project can officially start. Even though both the directors and producers of Honor Among Thieves are still optimistic about the project, they did note that "there are some practical realities with the finance contingent."
The directors also claimed that the poor success of the first film was due to a number of external factors like "not-so-great timing" considering its close proximity to the record-breaking Super Mario Bros. movie and the controversy surrounding D&D's licensing changes that dropped just weeks before release.
Even though the creators lamented in saying "who knows if it ever gets made," the directors still "loved making the first one," and noted that "there's so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn't filled with exposition or introduction to this family you've already become accustomed to, so you can kind of launch right into the story."
While the future of the Dungeons & Dragons cinematic universe is still somewhat on the rocks, fans can at least rest assured that its creators are both more than happy and even prepared to revisit the relatable fantasy adventure again in the future, so long as they can find the right partners for the job this time.
