Valve's Steam Frame Reportedly Close to Release

Valve may be getting ready to launch the Steam Frame very soon, with new backend activity suggesting that reservations for the VR headset are nearly ready to go live. The Steam Frame is an upcoming standalone VR headset from Valve built around SteamOS, PC streaming, and support for both VR and traditional games.

Valve announced the Steam Frame last year as part of its latest push into dedicated gaming hardware, but the headset still lacks an official price or exact release date, although the company previously targeted a summer 2026 launch. In the meantime, the company has continued preparing its software ecosystem for the device. Steamworks documentation confirms that Steam Frame runs SteamOS on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and can handle Windows software through Proton alongside x86 translation through FEX. Valve is positioning the headset primarily around low-latency streaming from a PC, while compatible VR and traditional games can also run directly on the device. Recent activity suggests the Steam Frame may be gearing up to launch soon.

The strongest indication yet that a launch is approaching comes from Valve dataminer Brad Lynch, better known as SadlyItsBradley on Twitter, who spotted a new reservation system for two Steam Frame SKUs in Steam's backend. Those two hardware packages were also updated shortly before the reservation system appeared, after going several months without changes, and the SKUs are believed to correspond to the previously confirmed 256GB and 1TB storage configurations. Valve used similar reservation systems when selling the Steam Machine and Controller, allowing customers to enter a queue before receiving an invitation to complete their purchase. While the addition does not confirm that Steam Frame orders will open immediately, it could suggest that much of the purchasing infrastructure is now being prepared.

Separate reports have also claimed that the Steam Frame could begin shipping on September 14, making the timing of these backend updates particularly interesting. Lynch previously said review units were already in testers' hands and that his sources expected Valve to begin sending headsets to customers around mid-September. Valve has not confirmed that date, so fans should treat September 14 as a reported target rather than an official launch date. Still, comparable Steam backend activity reportedly appeared shortly before Steam Machine reservations opened, adding more weight to the possibility that Valve hardware news could arrive within days.

The reservation system is also only the latest sign that Valve is moving closer to release. Recent findings have reportedly included Steam Frame setup and unboxing material within the Steam Client, while the company has already published extensive developer documentation explaining how software should run on the headset. Steam Frame can natively handle Arm64 software while using Proton for Windows, Lepton for Android, and FEX for x86 applications, potentially giving the device access to a much broader library than a conventional standalone headset. There have even been signs of a possible Half-Life: Alyx promotion for buyers, although Valve has yet to officially announce such a bundle.

Price therefore remains one of the biggest unanswered questions. The Steam Frame is attempting to serve as both a wireless PC VR headset and a standalone SteamOS gaming device, while its 256GB and 1TB models should give Valve room to target different buyers at different price points. Until the company announces pricing, however, it is difficult to judge exactly where the headset will sit within the VR market. The new reservation system doesn't provide that final piece of information, but with two SKUs apparently being prepared for queues and September shipping reportedly approaching, Valve may finally be close to announcing the Steam Frame's price and release plans.
