Do you remember the original Crazy Taxi? I sure hope so, because I don’t. I mean, it came out on Arcade Cabinets back in 1999; I was barely even alive at that point, but I’m sure this series has a special place in a lot of people's hearts.
So when I had the opportunity to play a short segment of the game over in Los Angeles at the Sega Summer Showcase, well, I was quick to jump right in. And you know what? I was pleasantly surprised!
I remember when games were simply that: games. Driving around with my friends on split-screen, causing chaos and just having a laugh for the sake of it. There was little deeper meaning, no world-shattering events, just a good time. Not that meaningful stories are a bad thing, of course, but this was something different.
As soon as I picked up that controller and started blasting my way around in that iconic taxi, well, a few of those memories started flooding back. If you’re down for a touch of nostalgia, well, you’ve come to the right place.
Before I got into the actual game itself, it was made clear that this was only a short snippet of what was to come. While there will be a proper storyline in the full version of the game and multiple maps, the story wasn’t available to me, and I only got to drive around a single map.
From the get-go, I was thrust into the driver’s seat of this fancy little open-top taxi and instructed to start driving folks to their assigned destinations. Starting off on an airport landing strip, I had ample space to drive around in circles, test the limits of the car, and, honestly, it felt great.
As with the original, you can drive passengers to different destinations, earning more money based on your time and how efficiently you get them where they need to be. You’ll have a set amount of time in which to get as many people to their destinations as possible, after which you’ll receive a Rush Rating and a cash bonus.
