Akira Toriyama never hid the fact that Piccolo was his favorite Dragon Ball character. Throughout Dragon Ball Z, Piccolo gets some of the biggest power-ups in the series, has an amazing character arc, regularly gets great fights, and is important to every single saga after his introduction. Dragon Ball Super even kept Piccolo around long after Goku and Vegeta surpassed him by unlocking God Ki. Now that he's unlocked his Orange form, Piccolo is finally on par with the Saiyans and ready to wage war in the Black Frieza Saga.
In a new entry of the Toriyama Archives, the Official Dragon Ball Site has revealed rare artwork of Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z. Piccolo's manga design actually differs slightly from the anime. Toriyama's Piccolo only has four fingers, a red belt, and a lighter purple shade to his gi. Piccolo's arm patches are also yellow, as opposed to pink, in the manga. It took until Dragon Ball Super: Broly for Piccolo to adopt his manga color scheme in the anime.
The September 11, 2026 edition of the Toriyama Archives spotlights a rare drawing of Piccolo that was seen on the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump 1989 No. 37. The issue was released on August 12th, 1989. The Dragon Ball manga was in its prime at this time in Japan, having just kicked off the Z-Era of the series. The Official Dragon Ball Site's description of the illustration reads,
"Weekly Shonen Jump's issue celebrating a record-breaking circulation of 4.91 million copies featured a front cover illustration of Goku and his friends taking flight, along with the slogan 'One leap toward your dreams!' Piccolo was placed somewhat discreetly behind Goku and Gohan on the cover itself, but he can be seen in full in this rare draft." Piccolo is barely visible on the cover, so this is the first time fans are getting a good look at what was essentially a lost piece of Toriyama art.
While Piccolo appeared on the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump 1989 No. 37, he'd been dead for quite a few chapters by this point. Piccolo dies protecting Gohan from Nappa in Dragon Ball Chapter 223 / Dragon Ball Z Chapter 29. Weekly Shonen Jump 1989 No. 37 features Dragon Ball Chapter 237 / Dragon Ball Z Chapter 43, focusing on Gohan's battle with Vegeta while Goku passes on the Spirit Bomb to Krillin.
The Saiyan Saga would last for a few more chapters, but the final battle was winding down by this point, and it was becoming increasingly clear that Dragon Ball would need to continue for at least one more story arc (especially with the ominous mentions of Piccolo's alien home world, Namek). Little did Akira Toriyama know at the time, the Dragon Ball manga would still run for six more years, with the Frieza, Cell, and Buu Sagas being the longest arcs in the series.
