The Fire Emblem franchise is near and dear to me. They're not only phenomenal strategy games that test your skills, but they also often have emotional stories and immersive world-building that seamlessly hooks you into whatever fantasy setting they take place in.
This isn't just because the stories themselves are gripping fantasy epics. Fire Emblem's gameplay reinforces every aspect of its story without you even realizing it. Fire Emblem is the franchise known for killing off companions for good if you make a mistake in battle, pushing you to play more conservatively and not risk putting your favorites in harm's way carelessly.
But this also extends outside of battle to downtime between missions. I've found myself going out of my way to have two characters eat meals together so they get a specific paired ending I want for them, like some unsubtle matchmaker.
All of this is to say that while Fire Emblem's stories aren't considered as intricate or deep as something like Witcher 3 or Knights of the Old Republic, certain features absolutely elevate it to being just as emotional.
That's why for today, we'll be looking at 10 Fire Emblem features that help the series pack an emotional punch as strong as any story game out there.
Before I ever started playing Fire Emblem, all I knew was that once your ally dies, they're gone for good. Other tactical games like XCOM share this feature, but what makes Fire Emblem hit harder is that a poor decision can cut entire storylines short.
