WARDOGS has sold three million copies. For a PC-only early access game from a Derby-based studio that went out of its way to tell people not to buy into blind hype, that number is remarkable. BULKHEAD CEO Joe Brammer marked the milestone with one of the more candid posts you'll see from a studio head – and it wasn't all celebration.
"We have been a bit overwhelmed with the response, and I mean it literally," Brammer wrote on X. "It feels like we've spent our whole time fighting bottom feeder cheaters and constant DDoS attacks." He also addressed the studio going quieter over recent weeks, confirming a significant portion of the team had been forced to take holiday to recover from the physical and mental exhaustion of the launch period. "During said holidays, most people had to work a fair bit," he added. It's an honest assessment of what success actually looks like when it arrives faster than you planned for it.
The numbers since September 10th have been hard to ignore. WARDOGS cleared one million copies sold on day one, hitting 350,000 peak concurrent players before the servers had time to breathe. Queue times filled up quickly, players struggled to get into matches, and the servers briefly went offline under the weight of the traffic. Within the first week, the game had crossed two million sales and peaked at over 400,000 concurrent players – competing directly with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Steam's charts for the top spot.
Three million puts it comfortably in the conversation as one of the most significant early access launches in recent memory. That it happened on PC alone, without a console release yet in the picture, makes the figure considerably more impressive. BULKHEAD has confirmed PS5 and Xbox versions are planned for 2028, which means those numbers are likely to grow again.
Brammer's post was careful to be honest about the parts that haven't gone smoothly. DDoS attacks have been a persistent problem since launch, and the cheater situation in a game built around a cash economy – where dying has real in-match consequences – has demanded more security work than the team anticipated. "We feel a bit out of control with how big things have gone and how much extra security we have been forced to do," he wrote.
