Many players come to Slay the Spire 2 and think, “Whoa, this game is way easier than Slay the Spire 1, right?” Well, I reckon that’s pretty easy to say when you’ve completed all the STS 1 Ascensions and already know the game's format and genre inside and out. The thing is, coming in fresh-faced with no prior knowledge or experience is another matter entirely.
In reality, Mega Crit has done quite a lot to ramp up the difficulty, things that might not immediately be apparent until you play for a good amount of time. And that’s great for those of us who like a challenge. I, for one, can’t get enough.
But if you’re struggling to get your first clear, or if you’re bashing your head against the Ascension 10 double boss fight, don’t worry, there’s probably a very good reason for that. Some mechanical changes really have had a considerable effect on the game's difficulty.
Enchantments are an amazing new mechanic in Slay the Spire 2. This feature lets you enchant certain cards, giving them buffs and bonuses that last for the rest of the run. This can mean extra draw power, extra track damage, or even something ludicrous like being able to Clone at Rest Sites.
However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows; enchantments can be tricky and often a trap for the unassuming player. First, some enchantments have both positive and negative bonuses, like Nutritious Soup, which buffs your Strikes but means they can’t be removed from the deck. Or Corrupted, which drastically increases a card's power but makes you lose HP every time you play it. Putting this on something like Bombardment is a big mistake!
Or sometimes it's tempting to enchant a card instead of getting a simpler, better reward. It’s always good to think ahead.
A common issue many players have brought up is that, especially on higher Ascension, Act 1 of Slay the Spire 2 is way trickier than Act 1 of Slay the Spire 1. But why is this?
